How is the Library Funded?

- The Huntley Area Public Library District is an independent taxing unit governed by a library board elected by residents. It is not a part of a village, school district, or any other unit of government.
- Public libraries are funded primarily through property tax dollars. The Huntley Area Public Library currently receives about 3¢ from each property tax dollar.
- All residents of the library district pay taxes to support the library. This includes all of Huntley, portions of Lake in the Hills and Algonquin, and parts of Rutland, Grafton and Coral townships.
- The library receives some impact and transition fees for new homes built in Huntley, Lake in the Hills, Algonquin, and Hampshire within the library district.
- The library does not receive other funding from the communities it serves such as sales or utility taxes or from school referenda.
- The State of Illinois provides about $31,000 per year to the library, which is based upon population.
- The library does not charge residents for a Library Card, and most services are free.
