Cas is a professional teenage ghost hunter. He uses his father’s athame (specially blessed – or possibly cursed – knife) to send harmful, destructive, dangerous spirits to their eternal rest. His father was killed several years ago, and while Cas is following in his footsteps, he’s also amassing the knowledge, experience, and power he will need to avenge his death. Cas learns of an intriguing and malevolent spirit – Anna – who murdered her whole family and has been killing anyone who attempts to enter her house since she herself was slain in the 1950s. He and his mother move to Anna’s town and Cas – for once in his life – makes some real friends, who eventually learn who he really is and what he does. At first he doesn’t want their help, but when he discovers the truth about Anna and her unusual power, their assistance is both necessary and appreciated.

Suspenseful and gritty, this will definitely appeal to fans of the supernatural, who like their fantasy dark, dangerous, and violent (with just a touch of romance). The narration in the audio edition is excellent. Readalikes: Holly Black’s Curse Worker series.
