Because of Mr. Terupt

Realistic Fiction

This is Rob Buyea’s first novel. It is an exciting ride, with twists and turns about friendships, growing up and life. The story is told from seven students’ viewpoints from Mr. Terupt’s fifth grade class, which might sound like a lot, but each one has a distinct personality which shines through in his writing. And it reminds us that each of us has a different perspective.

Because of Mr. Terupt is true to life in that each child’s family is unique and unfortunately, kid’s use situations to tease each other or judge one another without knowing the whole story. Mr. Terupt isn’t your average teacher because he invents fun ways to learn and treats his students with respect and honesty. He is the teacher we all needed in fifth grade. He is a great example for the students, in each situation explaining a lesson to be learned and a way to grow from past experiences.

The students are truly tested when an unexpected event occurs and the outcome is unsure. Through it all, Mr. Terupt’s teaching pulls the class together. They learn how they can be there for one another and what it means to be a true friend.

I would recommend this novel. It is suspenseful and you might need a tissue or two. I give it 5 stars!!
