This is a really creative book. I have never seen any book ever remotely like this one, which is why it is so great. It is about a girl and a boy who live in an underground (but no one knows that it is underground) city. Things work differently there, but they have storerooms full of stuff they need. Well, they used to be full. Now they are running out, and the boy and girl must find a way out.

It’s based in a city called Ember. Ember is underground. For Lina’s class in assignment day, when Lina gets runner and Doon gets pipeworks, they’re both very excited and become good friends. That day Lina gets home and finds her younger sister, Poppy, chewing on a piece of paper.  Lina takes the paper and figures out that it was written by the builders of Ember. It tells the people of Ember how to get out. But, since Poppy had chewed on it, Lina can’t read it. Lina and Doon get to work decoding the message. Can they get out of Ember before the lights go out forever?

* * * * Stars (Great!)
In “The City of Ember” you get a job to work in the city when you turn 12 years old.  Lina Mayfleet gets the job of a messenger. Doon Harrow gets to work in the pipeworks. In the time period, Ember is dying. It is running low on light and resources. Ember is surrounded by darkness, so there seems to be no escape. When Linda finds an ancient parchment, she and Doon work together to discover its purpose and if it can help the city survive. I enjoyed reading this book because I like the adventure and the turning points of this book.
