Greg Heffley’s middle school is in trouble. There have been a lot of budget cuts and the state is threatening to close the school if they don’t bring up their test scores. Greg relays – in hilarious detail – all of the ways the school administration has attempted to cut expenses as well as raise money to keep things going. It’s over the top, but also a decent social commentary on actual things that schools do to get additional funds or keep going without adequate resources – renting out spaces, corporate sponsorships, eliminating classes and entire programs, etc. Is Jeff Kinney making a statement here? Could be! Fans of the series will appreciate the madness, and the way Greg rolls with the punches. Fun and fast read for 5th grade and up (hey, even adults can enjoy this).
