A Sorceress Comes to Call

Cordelia’s mother Evangeline is a sorceress who often makes her behave by taking control of her body. She’s not allowed any privacy, and if her mother disapproves of anything she does she is punished by being made to be obedient. It is the most horrible feeling/experience. When their current benefactor stops paying the bills, Evangeline decides that it’s time for her to marry someone titled who can provide for her and Cordelia, and she uses her powers to woo a suitable candidate – the Squire. He, however, is surrounded by a cadre of folks who are determined to keep Evangeline at bay – most especially his elder sister, Hester, who senses that Doom is at their doorstep, but has no idea how to defeat it. A tangle of delightfully charming characters face off against Doom and her horse familiar, Falada, in this newest from T. Kingfisher, who pulls no punches with her villain – Evangeline is ruthless, as evidenced by the body count she leaves in her wake. Wonderfully chilling. Published for adults, but older teens/high school may enjoy.
