Loosely based on events from the author’s life, this tells the story of somewhat fictional Huda after her family moves to a new town with a large Muslim population. Huda, who is starting high school, expects that she’ll find the friendships and community she was missing out on in middle school, but discovers that her self identity is all wrapped up in being the Muslim kid. Now that she’s not the only Muslim (and not the only hijabi), she has to figure out who she is and what she wants to do with her life. She makes new friends, gets decent grades, manages to get along (for the most part) with her sisters – she has four of them – learns more about her religion and culture, and struggles (still) with microaggressions as well as blatant racism/anti-Muslim comments and actions (from a teacher, no less). This is a good read for anyone going through that process of self-discovery, who is trying to figure out who they are and where they fit in. Also explores an experience of being Muslim American and juggling the intersection of those identities.
