Job Description

  • Position: Processing Assistant
  • Status: Non-exempt
  • Grade: 5
  • Number of hours per week: Part-time, Salary $15.00-$23.36 per hour depending on qualifications
  • Reports to: Head of Collection Management
  • Description: Provides library materials to the public in a timely manner by processing and repairing materials for the library collection.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Prepares physical library materials for circulation, following department documentation and standards.
  • Processes materials with a high degree of accuracy and uniformity. Processing includes covering books, creating spine labels, applying specific stickers, barcodes, and taping book spines or media covers.
  • Repairs books and other materials, as directed.
  • Edits item records for repaired materials.
  • Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions and communicate orally or in writing in an effective manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to type, to read written materials, to maintain files, to operate computers and other library machines and equipment.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to perform work with minimal supervision, and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to retrieve and return books and other library materials to shelves or other designated places.
  • In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, the following represent the physical and environmental demands of this position: this position requires equal amounts of time spent standing, walking, and sitting. Lifting, pushing/pulling, and carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds is sometimes required. Climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, twisting, and bending are sometimes required. Repetitive movements of the hands and arms are sometimes required. Visual and verbal functions are essential to performing this position.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Two years of work experience, preferably in a public library setting.
  • Ability to accurately sort and file alphabetically, numerically and chronologically. Knowledge of Excel and Word a plus.
  • Schedule to be determined between the hours of 1 pm-8 pm on weekdays; weekends are possible. Schedule is subject to change.
