Effie is miffed because her friend Berrit made a new friend over winter break and has been completely ignoring her. It’s hard to compete with Garance, who is cool and French and a great artist. Everyone else seems to like her a lot. These sorts of mundane concerns are distracting Effie from her magical studies, but she gets pulled in again when she learns about the new problem her aunts are working on. They host a gathering of witches from the area and one of them shares that a certain intersection in her neighborhood has been experiencing some weird and dangerous activity. They launch an investigation to see if they can figure out who or what is behind it. (Did you know that weird things can happen above if there’s a dragon hibernating underground?) And Effie and Garance eventually realize that they have more in common than they’d thought. A nice blending of genres and some magical quandaries that take some real thought to unravel. This is a really enjoyable series. For grades 4-8 (older teens and adults may also enjoy).
