In this book, the Baudelaires new guardians are rich. Jerome’s wife is mean and selfish. She works along with Count Olaf to get her hands on the Baudelaire fortune. In the last book, Count Olaf stole the Quagmires and hid them in the “Broken Down Elevator.” The day before the auction, the Baudelaires go down the Ersatz Elevator using Jerome’s ties and cords to discover that Olaf was hiding the Quagmires under it. Esme runs off with Olaf at the end.
