Charlie Reade made a bargain with the universe to pay it back if his father stopped drinking and he finds an opportunity to make good on his word when he rescues his cantankerous neighbor after a fall. Mr. Bowditch is old and grumpy and cherishes his independence, but he reluctantly accepts Charlie’s assistance when that seems to be the only way he can get the medical attention he needs and care for his elderly dog, Radar. Charlie and Radar take to one another immediately, and Mr. Bowditch grows on Charlie, which makes it particularly difficult when Charlie learns he will probably lose both of them sooner rather than later. A terrifying noise in the shed out back leads to deathbed revelations, an unexpected journey, and to Charlie’s becoming part of the fairy tale himself. Published for adults; high school teens may also enjoy.
