The book starts off as a normal household cat named Rust who is dreaming about catching a mouse in a forest. His friend Smudge warned him about wildcats. He hunts to find a wildcat and soon has to make a decision. He makes the decision to be a forest cat. He is now a clan cat and in no danger until the untold treachery of Tigerclaw. Rusty is now named Firepaw (an apprentice name) and has two friends named Graypaw and Ravenpaw.
