“Schooled” by Gordon Korman follows Capricorn Anderson, a 13-year-old boy raised on a secluded hippie farm by his grandmother, Rain. When Rain is injured and hospitalized after a tree-climbing accident, Cap is forced to leave their isolated community and attend a public middle school for the first time. He is placed in a foster home with the Donnelly family, where he struggles to adjust to modern life. Cap becomes a target for bullies, especially Zach Powers, the school’s popular kid. Will Cap be able to survive in a normal middle school? Will Cap be able to push back the bullies? Read the book to find out!
I liked how Cap had some character development while his original character was preserved in some way. However, I thought the plot was predictable and it got boring in some parts. I also didn’t like the humor since it was forced. For upper elementary and middle school readers.
