In “The Prince” by Kiera Cass, Prince Maxon prepares to select his future queen. Aspen, a palace guard, secretly loves one of the candidates, America Singer, who enters the Selection for financial reasons. Maxon and America form a bond as the competition progresses despite her conflicted feelings for Aspen. As political tensions rise, Prince Maxon has to make difficult decisions about leadership and love.
I liked how I got to see extra insight into what Maxon is feeling in the Selection process because this book is told from Maxon’s point of view. The Selection books are told from America’s point of view, so I didn’t get to see how Maxon was thinking and feeling during the Selection process. Because this book is a novella, there is little to no room for character development. If you want to get a little more insight into Maxon’s point of view, this book is for you. For younger teens/middle school readers.
